Twinkle fits the criteria except it's not a "really great piece of music." It's good because it fills a necessary niche but it's not great. I would consider a beginner piece "great" if it's enduring and timeless and has made it into what could be termed "a standard repertoire for learning how to play." ![]() I think we all have to concede that our personal and individual definitions for "great" might be different. I don't know if it can typically be done by someone during their first year. The first piece from Kinderscenen, Of foreign lands and people, I do consider a great piece. Anyone know any specific pieces from that collection that might be doable by a beginner? Since the composer is Schumann I would probably think highly of any of those pieces although I don't know if I would think they qualify as "great". I don't know the Schumann Album for the Young, but perhaps some of that collection might be doable by a beginner. I do consider this a great piece, and I think someone could play it during their first year. Of all the suggestions so far, I like best the Bach Prelude in C. In fact, except for one of them, I never even heard of the pieces' composers. Although those pieces do seem suitable for beginners, I don't think any of them are near "great".
